The second-generation Toyota Sequoia was on sale for 15 years, over twice the life cycle of a typical car in the 21st century. Now Toyota has finally breathed new life into the Sequoia, its largest SUV, with a total redesign for the 2023 model year. This full-size three-row SUV received a new platform, a new powertrain, and a fresh interior that make it competitive once more with the competition.
We've sampled our way up and down the Sequoia's trim levels, including the entry-level SR5 model, the off-road-oriented TRD Pro, and the range-topping Capstone variant. Read on to find out which model is the best buy of the entire range.
2023 Toyota Sequoia SR5 Pros and Cons
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia's base trim level is the SR5 model. Gone is the big 5.7-liter V-8 engine. For the third generation, every version of this jumbo Toyota uses a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine (Toyota advertises it as a 3.5-liter unit), an electric motor mounted between the flywheel and torque converter, and a 10-speed automatic transmission. This hybrid setup, which sends power to the rear wheels or an available four-wheel-drive system, produces 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Or in other words, the 2023 Sequoia has all of the power it needs to haul a full vehicle of people, gear, a trailer, or a combination of the three.
The SR5 rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and has a standard power moonroof. On the inside, it has heated seats, an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. An eight-speaker audio system and three-zone climate control are also standard. We've liked our early experience with Toyota's new infotainment systems, so even though the 2023 Sequoia SR5 gets it on a smaller 8.0-inch screen, least the tech itself is good (the larger 14.0-inch screen is shown below).
Every Sequoia comes equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite of active driver assistance systems which includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beams, lane centering, and traffic sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic monitoring, and parking sensors are also standard. Pricing for the Sequoia SR5 starts $59,795 with 2WD and $62,795 with 4WD.
Available Packages
The SR5 Premium package adds a14-inch infotainment display, a power third row, a hands-không lấy phí liftgate, Softex seats, and 120-volt outlets in the cabin and cargo area. Sequoia SR5 models can also be equipped with the TRD Sport package, which adds larger matte-black 20-inch TRD wheels, TRD Bilstein monotube shocks, TRD-tuned springs, TRD interior accents including aluminum pedals and a red TRD push-button start.
The Tow Tech package, which is available on every Sequoia model and is standard on TRD Pro and Capstone trims, adds Toyota's Trailer Backup Guide system and its Straight Path Assist system.
Finally, the Sequoia SR5 can be equipped with the TRD Off-Road package, which buffs up its capability for when the pavement ends. This suite includes a selectable locking rear differential, Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select and Multi-Terrain Monitor systems, hill descent control, and crawl control. Other upgrades include TRD-tuned Bilstein monotube shock absorbers, TRD-tuned springs, package-specific 18-inch alloy wheels, and a red front axle driveshaft for enhanced cosmetics. The cabin receives a reworking with aluminum pedals and a red TRD push-button.
2023 Toyota Sequoia Limited Pros and Cons
Limited versions of the 2023 Toyota Sequoia replace the base model's standard 8.0-inch infotainment screen with a 14.0-inch display. Heated, ventilated, and memory seats are standard, as is a power-folding third row and a hands-không lấy phí power liftgate. The Sequoia Limited also receives standard second- and third-row manual sunshades. It can also be equipped with the available TRD Off-Road package, like the SR5. The 2023 Sequoia Limited starts $66,195 with 2WD and $69,195 with 4WD.
2023 Toyota Sequoia Platinum Pros and Cons
At the Platinum trim level, Toyota begins to add more luxury-focused features to the Sequoia. Second-row heated and ventilated captain's chairs are standard. The interior is also equipped with a premium 14-speaker JBL sound system, a head-up display, and wireless charging. On the outside, Toyota adds a panoramic moonroof, upgraded LED headlights and taillights, sequential turn signals, and rain-sensing wipers. The 2023 Sequoia Platinum with 2WD starts $72,395 and 4WD versions start $75,395.
2023 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro Pros and Cons
Those seeking a three-row SUV set up for off-road excursions will want to check out the Sequoia TRD Pro. Mechanical upgrades include TRD-tuned Fox internal-bypass shocks, an aluminum TRD front skidplate, a standard selectable locking rear differential, Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select drive modes, crawl control, and hill descent control. The Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro receives a TRD-branded heated steering wheel, standard second-row captain's chairs, and TRD branding on the seats and shift knob. Other exclusive exterior accents include a TRD-specific roof rack, a grille with a TRD light bar, and tough-looking marker lights the top of the grille. The Sequoia TRD Pro rides on unique black 18-inch wheels with more offset than other trims. The TRD Pro trim is only available with 4WD and starts $78,395.
2023 Toyota Sequoia Capstone Pros and Cons
The Sequoia's range-topping trim is the Capstone, which is positioned as the most luxurious version of this three-row SUV. Above the Platinum model, the Sequoia Capstone adds chrome exterior accents, chrome 22-inch wheels, power running boards, and semi-aniline perforated black-and-white leather-trimmed seats. Toyota trims the passenger dashboard with open-pore American walnut and incorporates LED ambient lighting. Toyota also makes the Capstone quieter with acoustic glass in the front doors. The Toyota Sequoia Capstone 2WD starts $76,795 and 4WD starts $79,795.
Which 2023 Toyota Sequoia Trim Is Best?
We recommend buying the 2023 Toyota Sequoia the entry-level SR5 trim level with the box for 4WD ticked too. Every Sequoia has the same power output, and the SR5 also has tons of standard technology, both in terms of device connectivity and safety systems.
On the road, in our First Drive review we found that the Sequoia SR5's 18-inch wheels are wrapped in tires with enough sidewall to provide a more comfortable ride than the larger wheels on higher trim levels. Folks looking for more off-road capability can add the TRD Off-Road package, and the Limited package throws in the larger available screen. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia SR5 is a well-equipped base model and it's the one we'd buy out of the five-trim range.
