Conditional Formatting - Hiding a row.

I've seen several solutions on how to use conditional formatting to change a cell's appearance but is it possible to have a row disappear (delete or hide) when conditions are met?

I'm making a task sheet and when an item is completed the user will check it off with a check box add the date and it will appear on the list for 2 weeks then either be hidden or deleted. I know I can use the CELL function to identify the row but not sure how to change it to hidden.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Conditional Formatting - Hiding a row.

CF only changes the cosmetics of a cell/range of cells, it doesnt actually change the cell itself. So I think the best you could do, using CF is to set the font and background both to white - essentially making it look invisible.

An alternative, would be to use a helper column and filters. Add a formula in a helper column that tests for your criteria, and when it is met, it shows an X (or 1 or whatever you want). You can then filter the table based on that helper column to hide the specified rows

1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

FDibbins-

Thanks for the advice but I have a follow up question for conditional formatting. I understand how to make a cell change it's appearance if the value meets conditions but what I'm having difficulty with is how to change a row value if one cell meets those conditions.

My example is to have a data filter limiting the input to "x" or "o", using the Windings font it looks like a checked box or an empty box. If that box is checked I want it to format the fill to a light grey color. The only way I see how to do that is to make a unique condition for each row. Is there have Excel review each row and if the cell in column A is "x", turn the fill to grey in in columns B,C and D?

Re: Conditional Formatting - Hiding a row.

the fact that you are applying a different font to a cell, again, does not change the contents of that cell. A font is a format, and it is cosmetic.

To apply the CF to an entire row row if a certain condition is met - lets say you have a data range A2:E10 (Row 1 is headings), and you have the condition to be met in C2:C10...
1. highlight the range you want to apply the conditional formatting to (A2:E10)
2. on the home tab, styles, select CF
3. select new rule, select use formula
4. enter =$C2="X" format fill GREY

Re: Conditional Formatting - Hiding a row.

Thanks, it works. I just don't quite understand the syntax. By using the conditional formula =$C2="x" I would expect the entire range to be formatted with a grey fill. I was trying to put in something like =C2:C10="x". Live and learn.

Re: Conditional Formatting - Hiding a row.

No, CF works cell-by-cell and row-by-row. So by fixing (absoluting) all cells in column C - thats what $C does - CF then looks to see
if C2 matches the rule, apply the rule to all cells A:E in row 2
if C3 matches the rule, apply the rule to all cells A:E in row 3
if C4 matches the rule, apply the rule to all cells A:E in row 4

Hope that helps, and thanks for the feedback
