Overview
In its third year on the market, the Kia Seltos gets slightly expanded safety features on the S trim, but no other changes. There's still room for five in a nicely appointed interior that also has lots of room for cargo. There are two engine options, and the choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive, depending on how much inclement weather you expect to endure. The Seltos is a great choice for first-time buyers who want the versatility of an SUV but with smaller dimensions and a price that's easier on modest budgets.
The Chevrolet Trailblazer has more power than the Seltos equipped with the base engine, but the Chevy also has a higher starting price. The Hyundai Kona has great styling with seating for five but provides less cargo space.
Pros
Affordable price. Good cargo room. Ample standard safety features.
Cons
Base engine is underpowered. Unimpressive fuel economy.
Verdict
Standout styling and entry-level pricing help the Kia Seltos differentiate itself in the crowded compact crossover segment. Its spacious cargo hold provides plenty of versatility, but a weak base engine keeps the Seltos from the front of the pack.
What's New for 2023
The 2023 Kia Seltos gets only minor enhancements this year, with blind-spot collision avoidance and rear and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance added to the S trim in both front-wheel- and all-wheel-drive variants.
Trims and Pricing
The 2023 Kia Seltos is available in five trims: LX, S, EX, Nightfall, and SX. All-wheel drive is standard on all but the S trim. The EX is the most popular trim, and it's what we'd pick, too. We'll explain why.
LX
Priced $24,135 (including a $1,295 destination fee), the LX gets the base 2.0-liter engine, continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), all-wheel drive, 17-inch wheels, cloth seats, air conditioning, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a six-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Other features include rear privacy glass, automatic headlights, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, lane-following assist, and forward-collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection. Options include illuminated scuff plates, puddle lights, and remote start.
S
Priced from $24,185, the S is the only trim with standard front-wheel drive. Additional standard features include LED positioning lamps and daytime running lights, front fog lights, heated side mirrors, silver roof rails, LED interior lighting, a rear center armrest with cupholders, cloth and synthetic-leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob, single-zone automatic climate control, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, navigation, push-button start, remote start, blind-spot collision avoidance assist, and rear and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist. All-wheel drive and heated front seats are optional.
EX
The EX, priced from $27,435, has standard all-wheel drive, sunroof, synthetic-leather seats, 10-way power driver's seat, wireless smartphone charging, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. This trim is our pick of the lineup for its additional comfort and safety features.
Nightfall
The Nightfall costs $28,335 with the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, 18-inch matte-black alloy wheels, cloth and synthetic-leather seats, black grille and side sills, and stand-up roof rails. Options include sport design roof rails, lower door garnish, heated front seats, and roof-colored outside mirrors.
SX
The SX Turbo is priced from $29,635 and adds standard bi-function multi-focus reflector headlights, LED front fog lights, two-tone roof, auto-dimming rearview mirror, cargo cover, synthetic-leather seats, eight-speaker Bose audio system, smart cruise control with stop and go, highway driving assist, and leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel. A sunroof is optional. This trim offers a good range of features compared to the top trims of both the Jeep Renegade and Subaru Crosstrek.
Engine and Performance
The Kia Seltos provides a choice of two powertrains. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a CVT, delivering 146 horsepower with 132 pound-feet of torque. Those are meager numbers that translate into lackluster performance on the road for the base engine. The Seltos is far more enjoyable to drive when equipped with the optional 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with a seven-speed automatic. We like the shift feel and reduced noise of the seven-speed automatic transmission, and the extra power makes it more responsive. This engine delivers 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque for quicker acceleration that outperforms competitors, such as the Honda HR-V and Subaru Crosstrek. The ride is smooth, even over rough roads, regardless of the engine. And the Seltos handles well with its crisp steering and solid braking. Urbanites will appreciate its compact dimensions. Whether navigating narrow, congested streets or parking in tight spots, the Seltos makes city driving easy.
Fuel Economy
The most fuel-efficient version of the 2023 Kia Seltos is equipped with a 2.0-liter engine and front-wheel drive. The Environmental Protection Agency rates it 29 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. With all-wheel drive, the numbers fall to 27/31 mpg city/highway. The 1.6-liter turbocharged version drops to 25/30 mpg. The Hyundai Venue is a more fuel-efficient option, but the Honda HR-V provides slightly lower fuel economy.
Interior
The Kia Seltos has an attractive and comfortable interior with plenty of soft-touch surfaces. Good-quality cloth and synthetic-leather seat trim make the cabin look more upscale than expected for the price. Front seating is supportive and comfortable with ample adjustability, especially when equipped with the 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat. Although the Seltos is a five-passenger vehicle, the rear seat would feel tight for three adults.
There's room for cargo with 26.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats or 62.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded to their nearly flat position. The Seltos offers more cargo capacity than the Hyundai Kona or Subaru Crosstrek. The drawback is a smaller rear hatch opening that might not accommodate larger cargo.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Infotainment in the Kia Seltos is user-friendly with a standard 8-inch touchscreen and smartphone connectivity through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A six-speaker audio system and USB multimedia port are standard features. The rest of the lineup has a 10.25-inch touchscreen. The SX Turbo adds a premium eight-speaker Bose audio system. Wi-Fi connectivity is not included in any Seltos trim but is available in the Chevrolet Trailblazer.
Safety
The 2023 Kia Seltos earned an overall four-star rating in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests, one step below a top five-star rating. The 2023 model year has not yet been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but the 2022 Kia Seltos received a top rating of Good and was named a 2022 Top Safety Pick.
Standard safety features include rear occupant alert, forward-collision avoidance assist with car and pedestrian detection, driver attention warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning system, lane-following assist, and high beam assist. Options include smart cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, safe exit assist, and highway driving assist.
